What is K-Factor?

K-factor is a value how much transformer can withstand harmonics without increase in maximum temperature value. A standard transformer cannot handle harmonics due to non linear loads. When harmonics enter into the transformer the core gets saturated as a result it produces lots of heat and failure of transformers. K-rating differs according to harmonic levels like K-1, K-4, K-7, K-13, K-20.

Step Up:

A step-up transformer is one whose secondary voltage is greater than its primary voltage. This kind of transformer "steps up" the voltage applied to it. For instance, a step up transformer is needed to use a 220v product in a country with a 110V supply.

Step Down:

It's the opposite of the above, and would be used to run for example a 110v product in a country with a 220v mains supply. The voltage ratio between primary and secondary determines the turns ratio of the transformer. Single phase Transformers are to supply power to control and / or auxiliary equipment not intended for direct connection to the main source. Control Transformers are specifically used to provide control supply voltage for the control circuits of AC motor starters, i.e. Starter coils, timers, indicating lamps electronics protection relays etc.

Single phase Transformers for contractor applications have to Energize the coil and Maintain a contact for definite period of time. The initial energizing of the coil takes 5 to 40 milI seconds and requires 3 to 10 times the normal current. While calculating the VA rating of the Control transformer, this factor should be taken in to account. They are available for single phase and three phase inputs and are in the range from 150VA to 30 kVA.
